Is Something Called “Freshwater Pearl Earrings” Made of Real Pearls?

Question by skylerthechampionXD: Is something called “freshwater pearl earrings” made of real pearls?
so in department stores i’ve seen claiming to be “freshwater pearls”. i don’t mean to sound stupid, but a lot of them didn’t look like real pearls to me and looked more like fake plastic. are these actually real, naturally grown pearls?

Oh, yes, Mari, and it is NOT a stupid question. Freshwater pearls are one of my favorite jewelry types, BECAUSE of their imperfections. A traditional pearl is formed in a saltwater mollusk when a grain of sand or small pebble gets in the shell and becomes an irritant….and the mollusk secrets a liquid to coat the grain and make it hurt less…the secretions harden and turn into a smooth pearl… freshwater pearls are formed the same way in mussells that live in fresh-water ponds, rivers and lakes…and are becoming more common as jewlelry, as they are less expensive.

Those round, perfect pearls that are so expensive are harder to find, and are often cultured pearls, in which an oyster is “seeded” with a starter stone that is perfectly round, so that the ensuing secretions make a perfectly round pearl.

The best pearls have always come from Asia, though the fresh-water variety are being produced in other areas now.

  • Gereen:

Target is selling fresh water pearls and they are not immitation. Although, freshwater pearls are a cheaper version of pearls

Freshwater Pearls are a sweet, smaller, and often more irregularly shaped type of pearl that can be grown in a number of different species of freshwater mussels.

Typically, though, freshwater pearls will form with a lower amount of organic material in their nacre than those which are created as a result of marine pearl oysters. This lacking in organic material allows the freshwater pearls to have a unique, glassy luster.

For those who love the look of pearls, but don’t enjoy the price tag, Freshwater pearls are the least expensive, while remaining quite attractive. They are especially desirable for rope necklaces made of several strands which are twisted about each other or long opera-length strands.

Very pretty. Very happy with these. They were better in person than on the website. Really quick delivery. I would recommend them to anyone who wants small pearl earrings.

I purchased a set of these earrings for myself just after Christmas. They were exactly the price I was looking for and when I got them I was blown away at how nice the lustre was, how perfectly round the shape was and how perfectly matched the set was together! I was so happy with them, in fact, that I ordered a second pair and had them sent to my grandmother as a “just because I love you” gift. She thinks that they are gorgeous as well, and that made me even happier! In a nutshell, a BEAUTIFUL set of pearl studs at an AWESOME price!

Bought these as a gift – I hadn’t realized how much nicer these were than your regular mall freshwater cultured pearls. great reflection and perfectly round (to the eye anyway).

I do wish these came with some kind of paperwork… there is a bar code sticker that says AAA akoya 14k and a made in japan tag but that’s it. Obviously for the price you weren’t going to get a nice box but something for the recipient to know what they were getting would be nice. There was a care card and envelope though.

Also, i bought a smaller pair of these for myself and while they were equally nice, those had a made in china tag.

    Not flawless, March 8, 2011

The pearls arrived quickly and well packaged. The have a nice shine and a slightly more champagne color than described. One of them did have a slight blemish which is on the side and hardly visible. The statement on Amazon stated these were flawless and that is why I am commenting here. Returning the pearls was an effort and the blemish hardly visible to others so I kept the earrings. It was also disappointing they did not come with a certificate as I has expected them to.
